That’s a strange way to put it, seeing as how Joe Biden spent the last year taping, barking and finding new excuses to avoid “returning” to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, aka the “Iran Nuclear Deal.” The Iranians have consistently stated that they are happy to “return” to the deal whenever the US does.
History in brief:
After 10 years of the aforementioned US pimping, barking, and finding new excuses every time Iran said “yes,” the JCPOA was finally accepted, signed, and ratified as a United Nations Security Council resolution in 2015.
The deal was easy for the Iranians to accept because it prohibited them from developing nuclear weapons, which they were not already obligated to do under the NPT, and a clerical fatwa declaring such development a sin. Islam, and what they hadn’t done, according to both the US and Israeli intelligence communities.
However, the United States immediately began to neglect its own obligations under the JCPOA, which involved the lifting of sanctions against Iran. And in 2018 the President of the United States Donald Trump announced that the US would henceforth only openly violate the agreement. He characterized the violation policy as “withdrawal”, but the only way to “withdraw” from the UN Security Council resolution is to withdraw from the UN itself, which the US has not done.
Only then have the Iranians cautiously and slowly begun to enrich uranium to a higher level than the agreement allows. Not to weapons or even to a level that violates the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Suffice it to say that if the US doesn’t keep the deal, neither will they.
Biden, on the other hand, promised during his 2020 presidential campaign to return the United States to its obligations under the treaty, but always with caution and “what ifs.” And ever since he became president, he’s been working overtime to avoid honoring either the new deal or the old deal… all while blaming the Iranians.
The Iranians do not appear to have, want, or are working to acquire nuclear weapons. But for some reason Biden seems committed and determined to poke and prod them until they decide why not get nukes?
Why? Two reasons.
First, the US has effectively been at war with Iran for four decades since the revolution that overthrew the Shah installed by the US puppet CIA. Iran is an evergreen excuse to meddle in the affairs of the Middle East and shovel money into the US military-industrial complex.
Second, the Israeli lobby, which has considerable influence in US politics, uses the phony threat of a “nuclear Iran” to keep the checks on US aid coming.
Biden should get off the hook and re-implement the original deal or stop pretending to be interested.
