Culture Round-Up: Stacks up pretty well! - Nord News
Culture Round-Up: Stacks up pretty well!

Culture Round-Up: Stacks up pretty well!

If you’ve recently passed Bertel Thorvaldsens Plads outside the Parliament, you may have noticed what looks like three stacks of wooden boxes.

Well, they’re actually three wooden sculptures, collectively known as ‘Oak Stacks’, made from centuries-old timber by Irish-American artist Sean Scully to promote his upcoming exhibition at the nearby Thorvaldsens Museum.

Old maritime timber
They originate from archaeological excavations on Papirøen in 2019, and the “different colored oaks provide an oblique reference to Denmark’s great naval history”, explains the artist.

The exhibition ‘Sean Scully: Material World’ opens on 2 September and continues until 5 March.

Safe passage in the company of the local fishermen
Just 7km south of Helsingør you’ll find Espergærde Harbour, the stage for a series of performances later this week (July 28-30) celebrating the lives of local fishermen. Go for an evening walk and listen to their stories, then enjoy a night of fishing. Organized by theater director Caroline McSweeney and choreographer Taneli Törmä, ‘Dance of the Fisherman’ has been made especially for Passage Festivalthe street theater festival spanning the Danish and Swedish cities of Helsingør and Helsingborg, which starts today and ends on Saturday.

World class Canadian comedian on the move
Canadian stand-up comedian Russell Peters will perform in KB Hallen on 14 October. Peters, who was recently shortlisted in the ’50 Best Comics of All Time’ list by Rolling Stone magazine, brings his Act Your Age World Tour. Tickets cost DKK 400 and can be purchased at billetlugen.dk. Also coming to Copenhagen this year is the American rapper Pusha T. Tickets for his show in Store Vega on 6 December cost DKK 400 and are available from ticketmaster.dk.

Contrary to fears, the festival guests have been exemplary
Despite fears that there would be disorder at this year’s music festivals, the crowds have been well-behaved, the concert organiser’s interest organization Dansk Live tells DR. The anti-social antics at several Tivoli concerts this spring as well as the Jelling Festival suggested there could be trouble ahead, but the Roskilde Festival reported that audiences were “unusually peaceful” – sentiments echoed by TinderBox. “Overall, the festival season has been very calm,” concluded Dansk Live manager Esben Marcher. “We have experienced happy guests and an enormously good atmosphere, and there have been far fewer serious episodes – such as fights – than there usually are.”

How clean is your campsite?
TV2 has today published a story that is somewhat condemning of Roskilde Festival’s clean-up efforts. The television station’s investigation, which was alerted to the condition of the grounds by two passers-by, reveals that a large amount of debris may be found. However, according to Roskilde Municipality, the festival, which outsources most of the clean-up, has until September to complete the work. One of the strollers told TV2: “When they’re at the festival, they live like pigs and leave their things in the wild, but when it’s the Monday after the festival, they’re environmental activists.”

Green Concert lets them wait
Access problems on the opening day of the nationwide concert tour Green Concert in Amager last Thursday led to a situation where thousands missed the opening act. Despite the fact that they opened the doors in Tiøren park at 1 p.m., 30 minutes before the first act, the festival organizers couldn’t let everyone open for another 90 minutes. Since then, Grøn Koncert reports that the situation has improved, although food and drink sales remain slow. It returns to the capital region on July 31 for its final edition in Valby. Aimed at families, Grøn Koncert always offers exclusively Danish musical numbers.
