US Navy amphibious assault ship USS Kearsargeis scheduled to arrive in Helsinki on Friday for a three-day visit, according to the Finnish Navy.
The 257-meter-long _Wasp-_class warship carries approximately 2,000 members of the U.S. Navy and Marines and is docked in Helsinki’s Hernesaari harbor.
However, the ship is not open to the public.
After the visit, the assault ship will head to the Hanko region, Finland’s southernmost continent, and Uppiniemi to continue exercises with the Finnish navy.
The aim of the exercises is to develop the interoperability and compatibility of the military forces of both countries. "and Finland’s ability to provide host country support," The Finnish Navy said in its press release.
Troops and ships of the Finnish Navy Headquarters, Nyland Brigade, Coastal Brigade and Coastal Navy will participate in the exercise.
Merivoimat stated that the training includes "significant water traffic and air traffic and causes air noise in the Hankoniemi and Upinniemi area every day during the exercise."
The exercises in the North Baltic Sea are planned to be held from 8 to 19. August.
Pirkanmaa’s helicopter exercises on Wednesday
At the same time, the United States Army Aviation Department and the British Royal Air Force’s combat helicopters will participate in joint exercises with Finland in Pirkanmaa on Wednesday.
The exercises were to be presented to media representatives at Tampere airport.
The exercises are led by the commander of the helicopter battalion of the Finnish special forces in Ut’s Jรครคkรคrirykment. Jaakko Kauppinen.
The US unit that arrived in Pirkanmaa a couple of weeks ago includes about 40 soldiers, two CH-47 Chinook helicopters and two UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters.
The British training unit has about 30 members and two CH-47 Chinook helicopters.
The helicopter exercises will continue until the end of next week.
