Members of Extinction Rebellion – the environmental movement that curbs climate change – blocked the pumps at the Ruskeasuo Teboil gas station in Helsinki this afternoon.
Extinction Rebellion protesters were mostly social and health professionals and students, according to the group’s tweet. The organization demanded that Finland accelerate the reduction of fossil fuels and immediately stop the use of Russian fossil fuels.
Teboil is a subsidiary of the Russian oil group Lukoil.
Ever since Russia invaded Ukraine earlier this year, Extinction Rebellion has been protesting Russia’s use of fossil fuels.
According to the Helsinki police, the police arrived and started negotiations with the protesters.
According to the police’s own estimate, there are about 30 protesters at the gas station.
According to Extinction Rebellion, the goal of preventing access to the pumps is to remind of the role of fossil fuels in accelerating the climate and environmental crisis.
Extinction Rebellion also said that the demonstration went as planned and that no one was arrested.
At the same weekend, the organization protested against the rally organized in Jyväskylä, where counter-demonstrators tried to spray the organization with water containing manure. However, the police dispersed the counter-protesters.
