The mercury may rise above 25°C by the end of the week, especially in the south, possibly even in the north to Pori, Tampere and Jyväskylä.
“Friday will be slightly warmer than Thursday. In the south, the temperature will rise to 27–28 degrees at best, Rinne said. “Temperature to the north [Pori, Tampere and Jyväskylä] however, remains below 20 degrees.”
The warm weather is expected to continue through the weekend and well into next week, with a potential turnaround coming mid-week. Weekend temperatures are expected to vary between 25 and 28 degrees in the southern parts of the country, between 18 and 23 degrees in the central parts and between 14 and 18 degrees in the northernmost parts of the country.
Also in Lapland, there are occasional showers during the weekend.
“It’s clear if the 30-degree mark hits somewhere around Saturday and Sunday, but it’s not going to be a widespread phenomenon,” he said.
According to Rinne, the reason for the warm weather is two developments: rains and cooler air are escaping from the country due to the high pressure system hovering over Northern Europe. Warm air is starting to penetrate from the southern parts of the continent, the temperature of which is currently 30–40 degrees.
He noted that it would not be entirely unusual for a heat wave to last several days in August. In southern Finland, there are typically five to six days and temperatures are over 25 degrees in August.
“My prediction is that the number of hot days this month will be slightly above average because of the high pressure system,” he said.
Night temperatures are predicted to remain moderate despite the warm air, over 15 degrees in southern Finland.
