CANBERRA, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) — Australia’s women’s soccer team will host reigning Olympic silver medalists Sweden for a friendly in Melbourne on Nov. 12 ahead of the FIFA World Cup, Football Australia (FA) announced Saturday.
The match will mark the Matildas’ first match in Melbourne since a 3-0 loss to Argentina in March 2019 and Sweden’s first match in Australia since 2008.
It will be part of a series of friendlies the Matildas will play ahead of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
The two heavyweights in women’s football last played in the semi-finals at the Olympics in Tokyo where Sweden triumphed 1-0.
Currently ranked 12th and third in the world respectively, both Australia and Sweden are aiming to make a deep run at the World Cup.
Melbourne Rectangular Stadium will host six World Cup matches, including two round of sixteen knockout matches.
