“Preliminary genomic sequencing by the UK Health Safety Agency (UKHSA) indicates that this case is not a current outbreak strain circulating in the UK,” UKHSA said in a statement.
The individual has been admitted to the High Consequence Infectious Disease (HCID) Unit at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital in accordance with Advisory Committee on Dangerous Pathogens (ACDP) guidelines.
Contact tracing of the person’s close contacts is in progress. So far, no other related cases have been identified.
Dr Sofia MakiThe Incident Director, UKHSA, said: “We are seeking to contact people who have been in close contact with the case prior to confirmation of infection to assess them as appropriate and provide advice.”
“UKHSA and the NHS have well-established and robust infection control procedures for dealing with imported infectious disease cases and these are strictly followed and the risk to the general public is extremely low,” he added.
Dr. Maki reminded all travelers to West and Central Africa to be alert for the symptoms of monkeypox.
ACDP has previously advised that monkeypox imported directly from West Africa and cases caused by Clade I of the virus should still be classified as HCIDs because we cannot predict their characteristics.
