Formerly Director of the European Union’s foreign policy Josep Borrell Wednesday expressed deep concern about the damage to the Nord Stream pipelines, the strategic infrastructure connecting Russia to Europe.
Borrell warned that the deliberate disruption of Europe’s energy infrastructure is “totally unacceptable and will be met with a strong and united response”.
“The European Union is deeply concerned about the damage to the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, which have led to leaks in the international waters of the Baltic Sea. Safety and environmental considerations are of the utmost importance. These events are no accident and affect us all,” the EU’s top official said in a statement .
“All available information indicates that the leaks are the result of intentional activity. We support any investigation to fully understand what happened and why, and we will take further steps to increase our resilience in terms of energy security,” he added.
Danish and Swedish authorities said on Monday that leaks have been detected in Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 under the Baltic Sea off the coast of the Danish island of Bornholm.
