Björn Isfält was born in 1942 and grew up in Linköping. In the mid-60s, he came to Stockholm and began studying cello at the Royal Academy of Music. Through a friend he met Roy Andersson and soon he had written the music for the hit film A Love Story.
The assignments quickly became more. Björn Isfält scored a whole generation of film experiences, a total of over 30 feature films over three decades – and his music has remained.
Rövarsangen is still sung by male choirs in the country’s theaters and his tunes from Änglagård are often heard at weddings, baptisms and funerals. Björn Isfält’s music is with many people’s lives, from the cradle to the grave.
Yet he is unknown as a person.
Björn Isfält died of cancer in 1997. He was one of the most used film composers in Swedish film history, but many have never heard his name. In this documentary, we try to get closer to the person Björn Isfält. How did he work and what has he meant to contemporary film composers – can we find traces of him in today’s films?
The program features, among others, the director Colin Nutley, the composer and friend Lasse Dahlberg, the artist Siw Malmkvist and Björn Isfält’s children, Jonas and Johanna Isfält.
A 2022 documentary by Nicola Maniette.
