After the dramatic explosion on the Kerch bridge connecting Russia and the occupied Crimean peninsula, Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused Ukraine of blowing up the bridge. Before the Russian Security Council, Putin also claimed that Ukraine was also behind other attacks on Russian-controlled territory. The Russian response came quickly – Russia has carried out massive airstrikes against a number of targets in Ukraine. President Putin has threatened more similar attacks. Several NATO countries have now promised to supply more advanced air defense systems to Ukraine in order to protect Ukraine against attacks.
New Russian commander appointed in Ukraine
After several weeks of Russian setbacks in Ukraine, Russia has appointed Sergei Surovikin as the new commander of what the Kremlin still describes as a “military special operation” in Ukraine. Surovikin is considered hard-line and has previously served in, among other places, Syria. Since the start of the war, a number of Russian generals have been killed, transferred or fired.
