PARIS, France: The World Health Organization and the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control have announced that Europe is likely to experience another wave of Covid-19 infections amid rising cases in the region.
In a joint statement, Hans Kluge, WHO European Director, and Andrea Ammon, ECDC Director, said, “Although we are not where we were a year ago, it is clear that the Covid-19 pandemic is still not over. We are unfortunately seeing indicators rise again in Europe, which suggests that another wave of infections has begun.”
Regional data from the WHO showed that Europe was the only region to record an increase in COVID-19 cases in the week ending October 2, up 8 percent from the previous week.
Members of the public fed up with Covid restrictions, along with confusion over the types of vaccines available, are likely to limit the number of people receiving boosters in Europe, where millions of people remain unvaccinated against COVID-19, the WHO and ECDC said. calls on European countries to administer both flu and covid-19 vaccines ahead of an expected surge in seasonal cases.
“There is no time to lose,” WHO and ECDC stressed, adding that vulnerable groups, including those over 60, pregnant women and people with co-morbidities, should be vaccinated against both influenza and Covid-19.
