The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, climbed 0.7 percent to 111.5280.
In late New York trading, the euro fell to US$0.9887 from US$0.9958 in the previous session, and the British pound fell to US$1.1470 from US$1.1611 in the previous session.
The US dollar bought 148.62 Japanese yen, higher than 147.51 Japanese yen from the previous session. The US dollar rose to 1.0016 Swiss francs from 0.9961 Swiss francs, and it was up to 1.3627 Canadian dollars from 1.3609 Canadian dollars. The US dollar rose to SEK 11.0451 from SEK 10.9606.
The Fed begins its two-day policy meeting on Tuesday. Markets widely expect the US Federal Reserve to adopt another rate hike of 75 basis points when the meeting ends on Wednesday.
