Leading Finnish decision-makers have previously stated that the country should refrain from imposing national restrictions on membership in the military alliance.
“The most important thing is that Finland applies for NATO membership. Full stop. Nothing more and nothing less. We have no special requirements or reservations that we place on our membership, Mr. President Sauli Niinistö outlined in September.
Helsingin Sanomat reminded on Tuesday that the position does not mean that nuclear weapons would be placed in Finland. The newspaper noted that the United States has stated that it has no plans to deploy nuclear weapons to countries that joined the alliance after 1997. There are also no military or strategic reasons for placing them in Finland, especially because of possible risks. in the event of a conflict due to their proximity to Russia.
“We must ensure that all critical infrastructures, such as energy and water, are maintained so that the people of Ukraine can lead as much normal life as possible under the current conditions,” he said.
The Prime Minister was also asked about Finland’s and Sweden’s pending membership applications. The applications have been ratified by all but two members of the coalition, Hungary and Turkey.
“It is important that this happens preferably sooner rather than later,” he said, adding that the schedule is not for Finland or Sweden to decide.
