Sweden can struggle to reach the climate goals by 2030: Minister

, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) — may struggle to meet its climate goals by 2030, the country’s Finance Minister said on Friday.

– It can be difficult, but our focus should be to reduce total emissions as quickly as possible, she tells (SvD).

According to Sweden’s climate goals, emissions must be 63 percent lower in 2030 than in 1990. For transport, excluding domestic flights, the reduction must be 70 percent in 2030 compared to 2010, reported (SVT).

However, the new has decided to lower the mix of biofuels in petrol and diesel from January 2024 to the minimum requirement set by the EU, in order to reduce sky-high fuel prices.

This is expected to increase emissions by ten percent, which means that Sweden will not reach its climate goal in 2030.

When the new government presented its budget earlier this week, it said that six out of 19 climate goals would not be reached. This is because new nuclear power will not be in operation in ten years, says Svantesson to SvD.

However, Sweden’s Climate and Environment Minister Romina Pourmokhtari told SVT: “It will be difficult but it is not impossible.”
