The fee for the entire calendar year, i.e. spring and fall semester 2023, can be paid at the same time. Students are not billed for the fee, but are expected to pay it on their own initiative.
The payment due date is determined based on the date the student has registered as a participant. For the spring semester, the medical fee must be paid no later than January 31, if the student has registered as a participant by then.
You can pay the treatment fee in Kela’s online service OmaKela. Students who cannot pay the fee through the online service, for example because they do not have Finnish bank IDs, can pay the fee by bank transfer. For instructions paying the healthcare fee can be found on Kela’s website.
The student does not have to pay the healthcare fee if he has social security from another EU/EEA country, Switzerland or Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Regardless of the payment, they can use YTHS services. Students using the services of YTHS must be ready to present a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) from 1 January 2023. Students covered by UK and Northern Ireland social security can present a Global Health Insurance (GHIC) card.
If the student does not pay the treatment fee by the due date, Kela sends the student a reminder. If the treatment fee is paid after the due date, the student must also pay a late fee of 5 euros.
The possibility of receiving the information letter only via the online service
At the beginning of the spring and fall semesters, Kela sends students a letter with information about the health care fee. Students now have the option to go paperless, i.e. receive the letter only in the online service. Update your information in OmaKela to go paperless. See detailed instructions Kela’s website (only in Finnish).
