The 2022 World Cup is over, but the dispute continues, only not in Qatar, but also in Denmark.
Monkey comparison on TV2
During the TV2 program ‘NEWS & Co’ presented by Søren Lippert, journalist Christian Høgh Andersen compared images of Moroccan players celebrating their victory to a “family of monkeys”.
“Following on from the talk about Morocco and their families in Qatar, we also have an animal family gathering to keep warm, and that’s how beautiful the lemur monkeys are,” he said during the show.
TV2 immediately apologized for the comment. It was “both wrong and offensive”, admitted its editor-in-chief Anne Mette Svane.
But across the world, the video quickly went viral.
Outraged by the remark, but unfortunately used to it
Unfortunately, it was not the first time during the World Cup in 2022 that the Moroccan national football team was exposed to racism.
Welt, a German media outlet, compared the team to the Islamic State.
Many Moroccans said they were shocked by the statements. “First it was the German journalist who compared Morocco’s soccer team to ISIS, and now this,” one Instagram user stated.
Far from the controversy, national coach Walid Regragui and his players made history as the Atlas Lions became the first African nation to reach the World Cup semi-finals.
