US Considers Teaching Ukrainians About Patriot Use At Home Politico

The anti-missile system will reportedly not be sent to for several months, until it has operators ready

The United States may begin training Ukrainian troops on its soil for the first time since hostilities with broke out, US officials cited by indicated. Officials quoted by the outlet said it made sense to teach them how to use the Patriot system on American soil, as opposed to a US military base in Europe.

The US promised to supply Ukraine with a battery of the advanced MIM-104 Patriot long-range anti-missile system, which requires dozens of trained personnel to operate. The course usually takes months to complete.

The indicated last week that the training of Ukrainians on how to use the system would take place in a third country, but political sources said it could actually happen on American soil, at least in part. They spoke to the store on condition of anonymity.

Fort Sill, Oklahoma would be the logical location for the program, given that it has instructors and complex simulators, an official said. But conducting the training in Europe would also be “feasible”, with additional logistical difficulties, the report said.

According to the sources, no final decision has been taken yet. If Washington chooses to invite Ukrainian soldiers to the state side, it would be the first case since the conflict with Russia broke out in late February, the news agency noted.

The Patriot battery would be sent to Ukraine only after its operators are ready, US officials told Politico. Most likely it will be drawn from US reserves rather than another location for deployment.

The EU has its own program to teach Ukrainians how to use -standard weapons and military equipment, which the US and its allies are pouring into the country to fight Russia. Most of the classes take place in Poland, although Germany hosts a few as well. Individual countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, , , and the have their own military training programs for Ukraine.

The US pledged to deliver the Patriot system during last week’s visit to Washington by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He flew across the Atlantic to meet US President and address the US Congress, to more than a dozen standing ovations.

During the speech, he claimed that Ukrainian troops were more than capable of operating US-made tanks and fighter jets.
