Rydman’s story was also confirmed by the written witness statements attached to the findings of the preliminary investigation. Since the investigation found no external evidence of what had happened in the private apartment where the crime is suspected, the prosecutors considered that there is no probable cause to support the rape charge.
The 36-year-old MP had denied the allegation throughout the preliminary investigation by the Central Criminal Police (KRP). The rape had allegedly taken place in the summer of 2015.
The investigation was started after an in-depth article published by Helsingin Sanomat in June. Several women accused Rydman of inappropriate behavior in the article.
KRP had investigated the allegations about him a couple of years earlier, but it concluded in about a week that the findings did not justify a preliminary investigation. Last summer, however, it summoned several women for questioning and opened a preliminary investigation citing new information.
At Rydman’s request, the Helsinki Police Department has launched a preliminary investigation into Helsingin Sanomat.
