A huge turnaround has angered several political parties. Five days before the parliamentary elections on November 1, Venstre (V) representatives said that Denmark’s borders should not be opened for quota refugees.
But now the SVM government led by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has proposed to accept 500 quota refugees per year.
– It is a breach of promise and a betrayal of the citizens’ trust, when you say one thing before the election, but do the exact opposite after it, says Pernille Vermund, outgoing chairman of Nye Borgerlige, to DR. “The left has failed miserably after the election – also when it comes to immigration policy.”
The spokesperson for the Danish Democrats, Peter Skaarup, went so far as to call the rethink “voter fraud”.
What a leap
Between 2016 and 2019, Denmark’s government led by the Left suspended the reception of quota refugees.
In 2020 it was restored, but by the end of 2022 only 400 had been recorded.
In 2021, for example, Denmark took in 197 UN quota refugees. Last year, on November 30, it had admitted 158. To invite 500 UN quota refugees in 2023 is a big leap.
“The concrete decision on receiving quota refugees, including the number, is usually made in the middle of the year. The exact number is determined, among other things, taking into account how integration is progressing and how many foreigners have otherwise received a residence permit,” explained Immigration Minister Kaare Dybvad.
