Minnesota United FC announced the signing of Swedish defender Mikael Marques on Monday.
The 21-year-old comes from AFC Eskilstuna on a three-year contract with a club option until 2026.
“Mikael is highly recommended. Several big teams in Sweden, Norway and Denmark became interested, but we got him through a good contact by us who felt that Mikael had so much upside,” says Minnesota’s head coach Adrian Heath in a press release.
“It’s an area of the pitch that we’ve tried to get more depth … He’s 21, incredibly athletic, has played full-back, played right-back in a three-man back line, played right-side of four – there’s a lot of versatility there. We’re delighted to bring him in and we feel like he’s just getting started. There’s a lot of growth in him.”
Marques played for Swedish clubs IFK Malmö and Jönköpings Sodra IF before joining AFC Eskilstuna in January 2022.
