In 1991, the Abdulla family comes to Sweden after five years on the run from Saddam Hussein’s persecution. While Trifa and her siblings quickly integrate into their new country, her parents freeze in their dreams of the homeland of Kurdistan and are marginalized.
Everything culminates in the summer of 1999 when Trifa is convinced that she will be married off. She decides she can’t live like this anymore. In the violence, the social control and the uncertainty about his future as a free person.
But her decision has a high price: she carries the grief, guilt and shame of having broken up her family with her for over 20 years.
To this day, she wonders if the price of freedom was too high.
