“Given the nature and scope of the challenges facing the country, I feel a duty first and foremost to our country – to ensure that it has the energy of leadership it needs, not only today but for years to come. this election season.
“We are at a critical moment. Blocking a referendum as an accepted, constitutional route to independence is a democratic outrage. But it puts the onus on us to decide how to protect Scottish democracy and ensure that the will of the Scottish people prevails. I firmly believe that the majority now support independence. But this support must be strengthened – and must continue to grow so that our independent Scotland has the best possible foundation, the statement continues.
Sturgeon is the first woman to serve as Scotland’s First Minister, and her resignation marks the end of an era in Scottish politics. He has been a key figure in the Scottish independence movement and has been a vocal advocate of Scottish independence throughout his career.
Sturgeon was born in Irvine, Scotland in 1970 and joined the Scottish National Party (SNP) at the age of 16. He studied law at the University of Glasgow and worked as a barrister before entering politics. In 1999, he was elected to the Scottish Parliament, where he has served ever since.
