The exhibition invites visitors to experience the spirit of the 1970s and to imagine how a well-equipped suburban house with a playground made of concrete elements felt to its first residents. It also highlights 1970s gems from various building types, such as theaters, town halls, university buildings, churches, factories and water towers.
The exhibition challenges visitors to consider the value of these buildings in our environment now that they have reached an age where they require restoration. The exhibition presents the diversity and pluralism of the architecture of that time and continues the series of exhibitions of the Architecture Museum exploring the architecture of past decades, this time extending to the 1970s.
The exhibition is open from 17 May 2023 to 15 October 2023, and has been curated by Petteri KummalaDeputy Information Service and Research Manager of the Architecture Museum, Jutta Tynkkynencurator of museum exhibitions and Anni Vartola D.Sc. (tech.) lecturer in architecture at Aalto University.
The studio of the Architecture Museum also hosts the exhibition “Diverse Decade – Posters from Architecture Exhibitions of the 1970s”, which presents impressive poster graphics from the museum’s collections. Between 1970 and 1979, the Architecture Museum organized an incredible eighty exhibitions on different themes, and the Exhibition Posters invite visitors to familiarize themselves with the aesthetics of the era and what kind of subjects were considered worthy of an architectural exhibition.
In addition to the exhibitions, the book “A decade of change โ Finnish architecture in the 1970s” will be published, which highlights the meanings and key phenomena related to this “forgotten” built environment. decade.” The scientific articles in the book are written by Minna Sarantola-Weiss, Kirsi Saarikangas, Ranja Hautamรคki, Julia Donner, Juhana Lahti, Jorma Mukala, Harri Hautajรคrvi, Essi Lamberg, Maire Mattinenand Anni Vartola. The book has been realized with funding from the Construction Products Quality Foundation.
