Immigrants stay away
As it stands, 72 percent of the population were members of the church, down from 73 percent last year and down 16 percentage points from when the numbers were first recorded back in 1986.
Ethical Danes made up 84 percent of the church’s members, while immigrants and their descendants landed at 7 and 6 percent.
Tingbjerg Parish has the lowest proportion of church members with just 14 percent, followed by Vollsmose (24 percent) and Gellerup (25 percent). All three areas have high numbers of immigrants.
In Denmark, you automatically become a member of the church when you are baptized, and members pay church tax โ an amount that depends on your income.
