A total of approximately 275,000 students are required to pay the fee. Most of them, about 213,000 students, paid the health care fee by the due date.
About 56,000 students have not yet paid the student healthcare fee. Kela has now sent these students a lateness reminder, which includes a fixed late fee of 5 euros in accordance with the law.
“Students have a lot to keep track of and we fully understand that they might forget to pay the maintenance fee. After receiving the payment reminder, there is still time to pay, says Emmi Lehtonen, team manager of Kela legal services’ overpayment recovery team.
About 4,500 students paid the fee after the due date. Kela has also sent them a lateness reminder, but only with regard to the late payment.
Everyone who has received a letter about the student’s medical care fee can also read the letter in the OmaKela online service. Students can, if they wish, update their information in OmaKela to paperless, which means that all their letters can only be read in OmaKela. Students can then choose whether they want to be notified by text message or email when a new letter is readable in OmaKela.
The health care fee paid to Kela by university students covers all available services from now on Finnish student health service. No other fees are charged for the service or per-visit payments. The percentage of the student’s healthcare fee in 2023 is 36.80 euros per semester.
