Sweden sends Leopard tanks to Ukraine

STOCKHOLM, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) — The Swedish government said Friday that the country will supply Ukraine with “about 10” Leopard 2 tanks as well as air defense systems.

“At Germany’s initiative and after discussions in what we call the ‘leopard family’, we have decided to deliver Swedish Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine in close coordination, above all with Germany,” Sweden’s Television (SVT) quoted Prime Minister Ulf. That’s what Kristersson said at a press conference.

Sweden’s Defense Minister Pal Jonson told SVT that “up to ten” units will be sent to Ukraine and that “we are building joint capabilities. Together with international partners, we are gathering both battalions and brigades.”

Sweden will also supply Hawk and Iris T air defense systems, something Jonson said was “important and central” to Ukraine.

The aid package announced last Friday was Sweden’s 11th aid package to Ukraine.

“Supplies of offensive weapons to the Kiev regime would lead to a global catastrophe,” Russian State Duma Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin said on Sunday.
