A sad anniversary
Bertelsen said the accident has prompted the zoo to take a hard look at cable installations in its bear enclosures to avoid a similar situation developing in the future.
The bear’s untimely death means that the polar bear population at the zoo is reduced to three – all of whom are females.
The zoo’s polar bear enclosure – the Arctic Ring – has only just celebrated its tenth anniversary and also includes North Atlantic birds and seals.
The grounds were built with assistance from a donation of DKK 150 million from AP Møller and the Chastine McKinney Møller Foundation.
It is not the first time that the Arctic Ring has been at the center of drama at the zoo. In 2015, a man was lucky to escape with minor injuries after jumping into the enclosure.
