The social effects of Customs’ crime prevention have exceeded 100 million euros, and most of the violations are related to sanctions against Russia and Belarus. Supervisory director Hannu Sinkkonen said that the number of violations of regulations has increased significantly, and last year more than 300 cases were taken into preliminary investigation. Sinkkonen also stated that the total number of customs crimes has clearly increased.
Illegal importation of narcotic drugs and medicines has continued in postal traffic and express cargo traffic, and now private individuals also participate in the illegal trade. Customs detected 1,389 drug crimes in 2022, and the number of petty crimes decreased due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the number of serious crimes remained at the previous level.
Customs authorities have also reported a decrease in snuff seizures and an increase in cigarette seizures, and the number of drug crimes and violations has also increased.
