The running war is an investigative documentary series in five parts about doping, sexual exploitation and suspected murder in the shadow of the sports giants.
At home in Eskilstuna, elite runner Dusabimana Kazungu dreams of becoming the best in the world. She goes to a training camp in the runner’s paradise of Iten, in Kenya, where world stars, sports agents and top coaches meet.
Soon one of her training companions, “Denis”, starts trying to sell her medicine, says Dusabimana Kazungu. She believes that he is persistent and that when she makes it clear that she cannot pay with money, he starts demanding something else – sex.
When she asks another female runner for help, she is advised to do as “Denis” wants – or leave Iten, according to Dusabimana. Everything takes a sudden turn when Dusabimana Kazungu is suspected of doping. She herself believes that she never knowingly doped herself.
Several profit from doping
A sponsorship contract from Nike or Adidas can bring in hundreds of thousands of kroner a year, and winning a marathon can bring in a million kroner. The big money means that both runners and those who sell doping preparations are drawn to Iten.
Star runner Mustafa Mohamed and former Eskilstuna runner Dusabimana Kazungu appear in the episode.
The series “Löparkriget” is a collaboration between Ekot, Radiosporten and P1 Dokumentär.
