The artworks, which are displayed in mainland locations and online, span a variety of media forms, including film, sculpture, role-playing events, and installations.

At the central location of Vallisaari in the Helsinki archipelago, there will be a unique outdoor exhibition of works that work in dialogue with the surrounding environment and its unique ecosystem. Saari hosts Adrián Villar Rojasite-specific sculptures, From the series End of Imaginationfeaturing nest-shaped sculptures that expand from his ongoing series Brick Farm. The sculptures are designed using a combination of software collectively known as the “Time Engine” and will be affixed to trees, rocks and buildings around the island. Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley invites visitors to participate in a role-playing performance event and installation that explores Vallisaari’s speculative black transmythology. Emilija Škarnulytėa new film installation Hypoxia ponders extinction, future archaeology, and deep time, exploring the ocean basin from an “alien archaeological perspective” to reconstruct past and present mythologies and beliefs.
The Biennale also exhibits works on the mainland, such as HAM at the Helsinki Art Museum, the Helsinki Central Library in Oodi, the Stoa and Caisa cultural centers, other public spaces in the city, and online at helsinkibiennial.fi. Helsinki Biennale 2023 opens to the public on June 12, which is the annual Helsinki Day celebration in the capital of Finland.
New Directions May Emerge, Helsinki Biennale 2023, promises to be a unique exhibition that fuses art with the natural world and explores new ways of living and understanding the world.
