Erkki Pirtola (1950โ2016) was a versatile visual artist who was also known as a writer and documentarian. Pirtola’s roots are in the Art Room of the University of Helsinki, where he studied in the early 1970s. According to him, drawing was the best way of expression for him.
The Works on Paper exhibition covers Pirtola’s entire career. The works in the exhibition were chosen from thousands of works and sketches. In addition to drawings, the exhibition also includes other works on paper, such as collages and watercolor paintings.
The exhibition not only presents an extraordinary box, but depicts a time of innocence. It presents an artist portrait of sincerity and a deeply human sense of humor and a manic need for self-expression and documentation.
The exhibition was created in collaboration with Erkki Pirtola’s sons and is its curator Veikko Halmetoj.
In connection with the exhibition, Veli Granรถ’s book will be published as part of the publication series of the HAM Helsinki Art Museum. Erkkilys Pirtomas Saving Finnish art – Erkki Pirtola’s colorful life, Parvs Publishing Company, 2023.
Laura Beloff and the working group: R bus / Kalasatama district 17.8.โ3.9.2023
This fall, a self-driving robot bus will be operating on the streets of Kalasatama. R-bus uses algorithms and chooses routes randomly. On the bus, passengers can hear the sounds of imaginary living creatures. Machine learning generated sounds resonate at a different frequency than other sounds in the area, whether human or non-human.
The bus has four stops in Kalasatama with the R bus code. Passengers board without knowing their destination. R-bus investigates how experiences and memories are formed in a world where digital information flows blur the boundary between physical and algorithm-based space.
