Helsinki is stepping up parking enforcement on bike paths and paths

“Stopping and parking in violation of the Road Traffic Act on bike paths and paths significantly disturbs and endangers the safety and smoothness of cycling. Our parking inspectors already follow the policy as part of their daily work, but during the cycling week we want to pay special attention to the matter,” said Oskari KaupinmäkiHelsinki cycling coordinator.

The city would like to remind residents that all stopping and parking on bike paths and paths, including cargo deliveries, is strictly prohibited. Only short-term stopping is permitted under certain circumstances, such as urgent need, lack of alternative parking spaces and the nature of the load, all of which must be met.

The initiative is part of the city’s efforts to promote sustainable and safe modes of transport and reduce traffic congestion. In recent years, Helsinki has expanded its cycle paths and paths, which makes cycling an increasingly popular and profitable option for commuting to work and for leisure time. However, illegal parking and stopping on such infrastructure undermines the city’s goals and poses a significant risk to the safety of cyclists. Enhanced monitoring aims to raise awareness and encourage compliance with traffic laws, ensuring a safer and more enjoyable cycling experience for everyone.
