Activities include playing and spending time with friends, outdoor activities and exercise, and small trips to the surrounding area. The needs and wishes of each group are taken into account when planning the activities.
By Outi Salo, director of basic education, the number of applications for afternoon activities reached a record 9,300 this year. Next fall, there will be a total of 11,090 1st and 2nd graders.
“It’s great to see so many young students participating in our afternoon activities. Guided and meaningful activities in a safe environment after the school day support the child’s well-being and help family life run smoothly, he says.
Afternoon activities start on the first school day of the school year in August and continue until the end of the school year.
A place is offered to all 1st and 2nd graders who applied during the application period
Afternoon activities are organized in around 250 locations around the city, both in schools and in the vicinity of schools, such as playgrounds and parish facilities. The organizers refine the activities based on their own strengths and practical limitations.
Helsinki offers a place in the afternoon activity for 1st and 2nd graders who applied during the application period. If there is no place available at the place you have chosen, your child will be offered a place at another place in your area. If there are more applicants for a place than there are places in the community, priority is given to 1st graders and students who need special support.
If necessary, equal applications will be selected by lottery. The time of submitting the application within the application period does not affect the allocation of places.
You can apply for a monthly payment discount based on your income
The monthly fee for the afternoon activity is either 100 or 120 euros, depending on whether your child participates in the activity until 16:00 or 17:00. The billing period starts in August. You can apply for an income-based fee discount, where you pay half the standard monthly fee, or a fee waiver, where you don’t have to pay a fee at all.
The discount can be applied for at the earliest when your child has started afternoon activities in August. You must provide your up-to-date income information for the application. Income limits and additional information are available at website.
Although the application period for school children’s afternoon activities for the academic year 2023–2024 has ended, you can still apply. Applications received after the application period will be processed in August. We cannot guarantee a place if you apply outside the application period. More information.
