Five Trkiye-based companies and a Turkish citizen accused of helping Moscow evade Ukraine-related sanctions
The US government plans to impose secondary sanctions against five companies in Turkey and a Turkish national accused of helping Russia circumvent Western sanctions, a senior Treasury official told Reuters on Thursday.
The sanctions are expected to be part of a large package of punitive measures targeting Russia, with sanctions against more than 150 entities, and will include shipping and trading companies suspected of helping to repair sanctioned vessels linked to Russia’s Defense Ministry and assisting in the transfer of “goods with dual uses.”
Türkiye-based Margiana Insaat Dis Ticaret, Demirci Bilisim Ticaret Sanayi and Denkar Ship Construction are accused of providing ship repair services to circumvent sanctions. Washington has also targeted the Turkey-based shipbuilding agency ID Ship Agency and its owner Ilker Dogruyol, as well as CTL Limited, which the State Department said was a middleman shipping electronic components of American and European origin to companies in Russia.
According to the finance minister, quoted by the media, the broader package of sanctions targets Russia’s industrial base, maritime sector and technology suppliers, along with facilities that produce and repair Russian weapons systems.
Another round of sanctions, now targeting companies and an individual in Turkey, would come at a sensitive moment for relations between Washington and Ankara, with the Biden administration hoping the Turkish government will ratify NATO membership for Sweden early of October.
