Although it is difficult to draw conclusions about how the pandemic has directly affected greenhouse gas emissions, according to Statistics Finland’s preliminary figures, the decline in traffic reduced emissions last year.
These findings show that Finland will meet its emission reduction obligations for the period 2013-2020, the national number breaker announced on Friday.
Greenhouse gas emissions fell nine percent last year from 2019, according to the agency, which said the decline in traffic contributed to the decline.
In addition to the exceptional circumstances caused by the coronavirus crisis, milder-than-usual winters and cyclical fluctuations also affected levels.
The total amount of greenhouse gases in 2020 was 48.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, which is a decrease of nine percent compared to the previous year.
