Latin America’s economies have been hit particularly hard by the corona pandemic, several reports show. The fall in GDP is expected to be much higher than in other parts of the world, and just over one in three Latin Americans is predicted to end up in poverty.
That the corona pandemic strikes extra hair here is due to the region’s dependence on world trade. Commodity prices were already low before the pandemic, but have fallen even more since March this year.
In addition, the countries’ currencies have weakened due to an extensive capital flight, as investors are drawn to stronger currencies and more stable regions in the world. Even if it means greater export opportunities, the positive effect will be very small, as the outside world buys less and less from abroad.
Der einzige Lichtblick are the so-called remittances, ie the money that relatives in, for example, the USA and Europe, usually send to their families in the country of origin. Despite all the fears, remittances have not decreased, but instead increased during the past six months.
Among the countries that are expected to suffer the worst economically is the third largest economic power in the region of Argentina, whose GDP is expected to fall by as much as 11 percent. Venezuela, Peru and Ecuador are also among the big losers.
However, the pandemic affects the population differently. According to the aid organization Oxfam, 73 billionaires in the region have increased their revenues by almost SEK 500,000 billion since the outbreak broke out.
From the UN Economic Commission for Latin America Cepal comes advice that the states in the region must take on debt in order to invest in investment, jobs, education and public support for the millions of poor. If they do not, there is a high risk of widespread unrest, according to Cepal.
