Die Einheitsliste droht, Wahlen wegen Armut auszulösen

If the government for the upcoming negotiations on social benefits on child poverty makes a settlement with the bourgeois parties, the Unity List will trigger a parliamentary election. It writes Jyllands-Posten.

– It will be so blatant a breach of promise from the government that it risks an election, says political spokesman Mai Villadsen (EL) to the newspaper up to the party’s annual meeting.

The announcement comes after the Minister of Employment Peter Hummelgaard (S) in Jyllands-Posten announced that they are clearly going for a broad settlement that also includes the bourgeois parties.

In a question and answer session, Mai Villadsen called for Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) to clearly state that something should be done about child poverty in Denmark. She did not receive the clear announcement.

– We must see if a political majority materializes – we do not know in advance, the Prime Minister said according to Jyllands-Posten.

After the 2019 election, the Red Bloc signed an understanding paper. It gave the Social Democrats the power of government.

The paper states, among other things, that the new government must fight child poverty. And that a benefits commission should come up with recommendations for a new system.

And that is the agreement the Unity List fears the government is running from.

– If not delivered in such a crucial area, we can easily see a scenario where voters must be asked again, says Mai Villadsen to Jyllands-Posten.

According to Information, the government’s two other support parties – the Radicals and the Socialist People’s Party – also do not view the government’s plans to make a broad settlement in which the bourgeois parties are involved.

– Let me put it this way – it lives life dangerously if it does not deliver on it.

– If anyone thinks that it is not clear in the understanding paper that we should abolish the cash benefit ceiling. Then you read the paper as the devil reads the Bible, says employment spokesman Karsten Hønge (SF) to Information.

Also, the Radicals’ employment spokeswoman, Samira Nawa, says the government is going to “live life dangerously” if the support parties are not involved.

It has not been possible for Jyllands-Posten or Information to get an interview with Peter Hummelgaard. Information, however, has received a written response.

– It is still my and the government’s goal that children in Denmark grow up in reasonable conditions and with the opportunity to be an active part of the community.

– I hope that we can reach broad political agreement on a new cash benefit system. It could help to create calm about the cash benefit area in the future, he writes.
