Last year, the online company Nokia filed by far the largest number of patent applications in Finland, the National Board of Patents and Registration said on Sunday.
Nokia Technologies filed 223 applications and Nokia Solutions and Networks 58. Together, they applied for 281 patents, compared to 259 the previous year.
Previously, Nokia, the world’s largest mobile phone maker, has focused on mobile phone networks since it sold its phone division to Microsoft in 2013. Three years later, the U.S. company sold its feature phone assets to Foxconn and HMD, which have sold Nokia-branded phones. from 2017 onwards under a 10-year license agreement. HMD, like Nokia, is based in Espoo, while the devices are manufactured by Taiwanese Foxconn.
Along with Ericsson in Sweden, Cisco in the US and Huawei in China, Nokia is one of the world’s largest providers of 5G network infrastructure.
VTT, Aalto on patents
Other significant applicants for patent applications last year were VTT with 65 patent applications (five more than in the previous year) and the Aalto University Foundation with 58 (6 more). Both are also located in Espoo.
They were followed by the metal company Valmet Technologies at 41, the telecom operator Elisa (40), the energy company Neste (37) and the chemical company Kemira (32).
VTT is state-owned and Aalto is mainly a publicly funded university. The state-owned investment services company Solidium is the largest shareholder in Nokia, Valmet and Elisa, and the second largest shareholder in Kemira. The state is also Neste’s main shareholder with a 36 percent share.
